Specialists of OKB Spetstyazhproekt dismantled the main girder of the structure, which was once a crane on the territory of the Balakovo NPP. The crane was created in the 80s and decommissioned in the 90s. The project was implemented for Atomenergoremont.

The structure of the main girder was at a height of 80 meters. The beam is 100 meters long and weighs 290 tons. Up-to-date performance documentation simply does not exist. Dismantling such an object is a complex engineering task.

The girder cannot be simply “dropped”, since the operating units of the nuclear power plant are located nearby. The girder also could not be disassembled with the help of another crane: given the dimensions and weight of the old metal structure of the crane, the height of the operation would be unsafe, given the swinging of the slings and boom of a possible crane.

Specialists of “Spetstyazhproekt” have developed a project plan and used B-SET. B-SET is a unique self-erecting hydraulic lifting system. There are only two B-SETs in the world: one in Russia in the Spetstyazhavtotrans Group of Companies, the second – in the USA.

Preparation began on June 15, 2021. The dismantling of the beam itself took 3 days.

“The first day was the hardest. We lowered 290 tons from the height of a 25-storey building. Captures the spirit! Undoubtedly, the only way to safely dismantle such a construction on the territory of a nuclear power plant is B-SET,” says the project manager.

We will post information on the details of the implementation of this project later, upon completion of all work on the site.
